      Take a Dip

We had an unbelievable night last night! BBQ was the largest we have ever had. 83 people came to get to know one another and celebrate in our annual baptism.

I love and look forward to this night all year long. The kids were out having a blast! The weather was awesome! Stan and Karen host it so well. I often find it interesting to put the food that was brought with the person who brought it. But none of that compares to baptizing people. It is The most beautiful moment when the person is brought out of the water. WOW!

Here are some pictures of the night for those who were there and those who wish they were.

      Like the Coast Guard...

When E and I started High Point it was a long process involving many different stages and culminating in a Grand Opening to the public. We set a date. We prepared like crazy. We made a week by week month by month plan of how we were going to be ready to open the doors with success on January 29th 2006. We accomplished that vision.

As I was preparing for the church plant I was praying about my uncertainties involved in the plant... will I be able to pastor these people, will anyone show up, Am I spiritual enough, am I practical enough, will the theatre work, will there be enough money to personally make it, will there be enough money to professionally make it, can I preach that many times in a row?… I was praying and thinking and reading the word and I came across… Isaiah 54 there is so much to this chapter for me. It felt like God was saying… “I know you have never done this before but I will make you a success.” -cool!

This is the passage that I really got excited about.
2 "Enlarge the place of your tent,
                     stretch your tent curtains wide,
                    do not hold back;
                     lengthen your cords,
                     strengthen your stakes.

           3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
                     your descendants will dispossess nations
and settle in their desolate cities.
      Come On! Lets think big

I got excited because I knew that the local church is the hope of the world. That if we are growing and doing church in a way that truly helped people... FIND THEIR FAITH- DISCOVER THEIR FAITH- LIVE THEIR POTENTIAL… then we would be building strong believers in Christ. We would be going into this world and reaching those who do not know him. We would be seeing addicts set free, marriages restored, parents empowered, people given purpose. Sounds good doesn't it?

The vision I have in my head of high point is a massive one. Church plants, multiple campuses, multiple services, hundreds of connections groups throughout the twin cities and beyond, theaters filled, missionaries sent out, lives changed on a grand scale. Can I tell you something a little embarrassing? I thought that God would have already given me that vision. I know it is silly now but for a while I found myself ultimately dissatisfied by how “slow” our growth was. REALITY CHECK! We are not growing slow! We are growing steady and consistent. I had to come to a realization. That is my META God vision. It is my life long goal. Looking through the pages of scripture you see lots of people having META vision and few realizing them ultimately. Often they lay the ground work for the next person to come along and build on the foundation.

The moment I figured this out the moment I could grab the  binoculars and ask God what he had for me and High Point in the not so distant future. The MICRO vision. That gets pretty exciting. This vision is attainable! It is not that far away. It is what you and I and High Point will be around the corner.

The MICRO vision for High Point is about creating pathways to God in a more systematic way. It is about Organizing to make what we do simpler, more effective, and scalable. It is as if we spent the last 2.5 years putting in the footings that now we are going to build the pretty arches on so that some day down the line this bridge to my META vision can be built. The pastoral team and the leaders of the church are beginning to regroup, unite, and push forward with renewed focus and clarity as to where we are going.

Let me be clear about this next few stages. God has entrusted us with talents that are powerful and wonderful and he expects us to multiply them. So we at High Point are going to empower people. We are going to reach into this city and pull people aboard the boat and do what it takes organizationally to help them not jump back in the water. We are like the Coast guard… In order to be more effective at rescuing people we are going to have to train harder and get better at how and what we do. We are in the life saving business and the more resource we have the better tools We can get to reach people. The bigger boat we have the more workers are available to reach over the side and pull the drowning in.

My vision is sharp and I can see us being a powerful force in this community and making a big impact in the short term. Pray for this as we go into this world to seek and save that which is lost.

      Weekend Mind Dump!

      Weakened mind dump:

      • I always feel like when I get in the office on Tuesday that the whole week has passed. In reality It has just started for me.
      • last week there was no margin. I hate the intensity of that. I slept a lot Monday.
      • Saturday night E and I were totally under a spiritual attack... when you point your ship into the storm you are bound to hit waves... the dog got sick in the night, O woke up early, couldn't sleep, stressed about the message... Pray for me and E on Saturdays... we need it!
      • We are Changing the game! Seriously the rules of how we do High Point are about to radically change!
      • I am going to try and tame my preaching mind and be more outline driven. I think it will help me stay focused and dissect the rhythm of the message more effectively... it will also help those who are more systematic in thought feel more comfortable with my preaching. The rest of you will not care... :)
      • OK... you heard it here first and more... much more to come... I am laying out a goal... Set Up in 30 Minutes or less... If you can get a pizza delivered you can set up church. This means everything changes.
      • Easier set up for our volunteers!
      • Less and more stuff!
      • More people recruited to help set High Point Up!
      • Greater emphasis on flow!
      • Mike, Courtney and Elizabeth are the finest Pastors around! Bar none!
      • I think I am going to train seriously for a marathon... Get ride of the muffin top.
      • I Drank a vente double shot with a power boost and extra shot... 6 shots, power boost (whatever that is?) - NEVER AGAIN!
      • The root word of Organization is organize
      • "Jumper" had a lot of promise but didn't deliver... "Clover Field" didn't tell me why it was called clover field... that I could tell. I really liked it but I wished it had a little more ending...
      •  I was dressed like Miami Vice Sunday... P. Mike made a lot of fun of me.
      • We are going to Grow this fall... (more on that coming soon)
      • The dream God gave me years ago... is a lifelong dream... The dream we grabbed hold of this weekend will happen fast! We defined a picture that when we finish working out the details will thrust us into a new level. EXCITED!
      • Reading again in my NLV 1 year bible... I took a little break and am now back in the groove.
      • looking forward to BBQ

Should Christians be Moral- Original post by Paul Stewart

I just read my buddy Paul's post on Morality and Christianity... It is Good. Here is a re-post...

Morality is concerned with or adhering to the code of interpersonal behavior that is considered right or acceptable in a particular society. Basically morality is the attempt of humanity to justify itself before God and others.

But a Christian ethic is an ethic of the cross. It is an ethic about death – the end of striving to be moral and the beginning of righteousness.

Morality does not require death. We can be good, upright, moral people without the cross. But the problem is not that we are not good, it is that we are fallen and cast out of the presence of God.

In fact, Genesis 3 lists “striving for good” as a sign of our fallen state. Martin Luther said that the issue in ethics is not “the move from vice to virtue, it’s the move from both vice and virtue to righteousness.” Our problem is not that we are immoral, but that we are moral.

Being “good” does not repair our relationship with God and others. Christian ethics is an ethics of righteousness, and righteousness is fundamentally a relational category, not a moral category. Righteousness depends not on effort but on who we are related to.

Christian ethics begin with relationship, not keeping moral codes. Loving God and neighbor is Christian ethics. This is what God designed and created us to do. In the fall we lost our ability to be human – to do what we were created to do. Sin at its essence is separation – from God and others.

In being separate from God, we now know good and evil; in knowing good and evil we are compelled to make moral decisions in order to justify ourselves.

That is why the cross tells us that humanity must die. This is primarily and first the act of Jesus Christ, but it is important to view Christian ethics as a response to that act. To follow Christ, take up our cross, deny ourselves and to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to Him. Death with Christ is the way to life with Christ and apart from death there is no righteousness.

The goal of Christianity is not to produce moral people. Following Christ is about relationship not about rules and regulations. It is not about adhering to lists or following certain formulas or simply trying to convince people to stop drinking, smoking or gambling.

Christianity is about helping people connect with the life-giving presence of God and to enter into that covenant relationship and beginning to live in ways that help to maintain that relationship.

      Pour Your heart into it!

Just picked up my copy of Pour Your heart into it...

      I love the Prologue...

      • Care more than others think wise.
      • Risk more than others think safe.
      • Dream more than others think practical.
      • Expect more than others think possible.

My prayer- Lord you have given me a dream to fulfill your great commission in the twin cities. May you guide me and the team of High Point to reach our potential. Give us a clear next step as we plot our course for the future of High Point. May we see and judge with clarity. May we find that your Holy Spirit has been preparing the way. Help us reach more people who do not know you with your message and may we truly help people
FIND THEIR PLACE- DEVELOP THEIR FAITH- LIVE THEIR POTENTIAL!

This is going to be a great year! Get ready!

      Next step

I am a believer in steps. In my life I have skipped steps only to find myself looking back at my life and having to go back to that step. It is like a kid who is playing baseball and hits the ball only to run right past 1st base all the way to second. If you don't tag the base then your out.

Baptism is one of those first bases or first steps. It is one of two core things that Jesus commanded. Baptism along with communion are simply the two most basic first steps in this Christian walk. Not just did Jesus talk about baptism, Jesus was baptized as an adult. My favorite story in scripture is the ethiopian eunuch in scripture was explained the gospel and pulled his chariot over to be baptized right then and there.

I find that a lot of people have an apprehension to baptism. They either were sprinkled as a baby or just feel a little odd about that practice. Baptism is for me the most spiritually charged moment I get to be apart of in a persons life. God is all about explaining things practically to us as humans. He wanted a way to help us understand what Jesus did on the cross. His way is for us to go under the water and “die” (not really but symbolically… I rarely hold people under tell the bubbles come up… lol) to their old way of life. Die to Sin and to be raised again out of the water a new creation as Christ rose again after the crucifixion. It is so inspiring. Every time I pull people out of the water I sense the presence of God so strong it makes my want to cry and laugh at the same time. The only other time this has happened was seeing my baby being born.

So take the next step as an adult Christ fallower… Sign up Sunday and Wednesday at the BBQ lets hop in the pool and be baptized.

      Prayer call

Tomorrow the pastoral team of High Point gathers for our annual vision retreat. I am excited. We are hashing through some big things. I feel like it is the kind of stuff that when done puts wind in our sails for a long time to come. We are asking God to show up and guide our time together. Please Pray for us, we need it.

See you Sunday for Week #3 of "The Dirty Dozen"

      June 18, 2008

Pete and repeate went into a store...

I have been challenged lately. The classic adage if you want the same results keep doing the same thing but don’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results. I want different results. More than that. I feel drawn out of the boat I am riding safely in into the unknown in order that I as a person become closer to the man God has planned for me to be.

Let me give you a few examples...
Message prep- I am re-working how I prepare my messages. I take to long and am not getting them done until the week of. I am starting to work on a series five weeks out. If I can be weeks ahead then our overall product will improve and there will be more margin for God to speak.
Study Time- margin is needed to give me room in my schedule to study. Leadership, theology, creative new ideas, or just to journal and write out my God thoughts/ man thoughts.
Meetings- how and who I spend my time needs to be evaluated as we grow. Our church leadership meetings need to be redrawn up. The way we worked in the past while great and fun is not the way to grow to the next level. In the future we will continue to have fun it will just come about in a different way.
Date nights- I want to be more intentional about how I spend my quality time with Olivia and Elizabeth.
Fitness- I am not happy with my body and have only one option… RUN FOREST RUN!
Evangelism- I want to be a better fisher of men. Looking for every opportunity to show people around me Christ.
There are a bunch more and I am in the middle of this process.

Here is what I know. This is not a tomorrow thing. I am chipping away at one or two parts at a time. This will make me… a better father, husband, friend, pastor, student, worshiper. I tell you this not to show you how spiritual I am rather to draw you out of the boat of mediocrity with me. Look at your life. Look over the rail and out into the great unknown of what could be. If you have been stuck… not feeling that stretch, that free fall, that “ok… God, LETS GO!” in a while. Then chart your course with me. Write down some areas that God is leading you to walk in a new direction in. Then hop the guard rail and walk into the place God has destined you for!

We are on a journey. Many of us stop along the way and think we are fine staying in the spot that has provision. But I am convinced that there is more! That there is a beautiful bounty ahead of me. A place in my life with a greater sense of significance, influence, sanity, joy, peace, adventure, vision, responsibility, and a place that will make God smile broadly with joy at my worshipful obedience.

Any thoughts on how God is changing you or areas he is calling you out in? I would love to hear.
